E. E. Doc Smith - Skylark seriesThe Skylark of Space is one of the earliest novels of interstellar travel. First published in 1928, it was written between 1915 and 1921 by chemical engineer Edward E. "Doc" Smith and Lee Hawkins Garby. The Skylark of Space is often categorized as the first literary space opera (in the complimentary sense), complete with protagonists perfect in mind, body, and spirit, who fight against villains of absolute evil. The Skylark series has been in and out of print ever since its first publication, in both hardback and paperback editions, and is considered a classic of pulp science fiction. Frederik Pohl says of the book, "With the exception of the works of H. G. Wells, possibly those of Jules Verne — and almost no other writer — it has inspired more imitators and done more to change the nature of all the science fiction written after it than almost any other single work."[

Scientific American's Extreme PhysicsScientific American's Extreme Physics
Exclusive Online Issue

SYNOPSIS:
Time travel, teleportation, parallel universes--in certain sectors of the physics community, notions once relegated to the realm of science fiction are now considered quite plausible. Indeed, by some accounts, the truth may be stranger than fiction. Consider the possibility that the universe is a huge hologram or that matter is composed of tiny, vibrating strings. Perhaps space and time are not continuous but instead come in discrete pieces. These are the wonderfully weird ways in which theorists are beginning to conceive of the world (or worlds!) around us.

In this exclusive online issue, leading authorities share their expertise on these cutting-edge ideas. Brian Greene untangles string theory; Max Tegmark reveals how astronomical observations support the existence of parallel universes; other scholars tackle quantum teleportation, negative energy, the holographic principle and loop quantum gravity; and Gordon Kane ushers in the dawn of physics beyond the Standard Model. --The Editors

Ernest Hemingway. The Old Man and the Sea.
e-book in different formats

Short novel by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1952 and awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Completed after a 10-year literary drought, it was his last major work of fiction. The novel is written in Hemingway's characteristically spare prose. It concerns an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago who finally catches a magnificent fish after weeks of not catching anything. After three days of playing the fish, he finally manages to reel it in and lash it to his boat, only to have sharks eat it as he returns to the harbor. The other fishermen marvel at the size of the skeleton; Santiago is spent but triumphant.
