Aim High is a six-level course that develops language learning through carefully chosen vocabulary (including words from the Oxford 3000™), texts which are interesting, and essential study skills. The iTools digital material adds variety to class teaching and the Student CD-ROM is great for home study. Revision and self assessment sections help learners towards exam success and there is extensive testing material too.
Lorna Doone by R. D. Blackmore. New Method Supplementary Reader Stage 4This is yet another adaptation of all-time classic by R. D. Blackmore. What is worth mentioning however is that the adaptation was made by another classic, of teaching English to foreigners, Michael Philip West (1888–1973). As a colonial educator in Bengal for a period of twenty years, he developed many original insights into problems of teaching English ‘in difficult circumstances’ and – on this basis – became a prolific writer of textbooks for foreign students during the late 1920s and 1930s. The book is illustrated and supplied with detailed questions aimed at confirming students' understanding of the story. This edition was published in the USSR in 1977.
This book examines the pronunciation goals of teachers, course leaders, and learners on a ten-week UK pre-sessional access course, particularly with regard to suprasegmental instruction and target of instruction on how these goals are reflected in pronunciation assessment, and how teacher goals are informed by their attitudes and beliefs. A mixed methods approach, including direct observation and semi-structured interviews, is employed to address the area of enquiry. Results show a lack of clarity of course goals. Although there is a firm emphasis on suprasegmental instruction, in semi-structured interviews, teachers report a lack of clear course goals and guidance.
