In Trespassing Boundaries, contemporary Woolf scholars discuss the literary importance of Woolf's short stories. Despite being easily available, these stories have not yet received the attention they deserve. Complex yet involving, they should be read not only for the light they shed on Woolf's novels, but in their own right, as major contributions to short fiction as a genre. This volume places Woolf's short stories in the context of modernist experimentalism, then explores them as ambitious attempts to challenge generic boundaries, undercutting traditional distinctions between short fiction and the novel, between experimental and popular fiction, between fiction and nonfiction.

Kimberly Hill Campbell defines several kinds of short texts. She then applies the same reading strategies to all of them. If you want to know about strategies, read Strategies That Work by Harvey and Goudvis or anything by Laura Robb. The majority of the recommended reads in this book, particularly the short stories, are tired and over-anthologized. The most agonizing thing about this book, though, is that Campbell never misses a chance to reference how she rose above the texts and curriculums imposed upon her to become a special teacher. This book is absolutely not worth reading.

  Joseph Conrad, born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, (1857-1924) was a Polish-born novelist who spent most of his adult life in Britain. He is regarded as one of the greatest English novelists, which is even more notable because he did not learn to speak English well until he was in his 20s. He is recognized as a master prose stylist.

The stories published here were largely written in the three decades following the First World War. Although Maugham had written short stories early in his career, preoccupation with his other writing led to a long interval before he next took up the form, on a voyage in the South Seas in 1919, originally as a relief from other work.

Each of these stories can stand on its own. Maugham himself wrote that such a compactness of technique, character and incident may seem disconcerting in a world where at least one loose end is normally left behind; but the compactness is part of the method used by such short story writers as Maugham. As he put it in his own distinctive way, such a writer ‘seeks to prove nothing. He paints a picture and sets it before you. You can take it or leave it.’ Most take it.
