As the scope of studies that can be characterized as ‘Historical Linguistics’ has expanded, ICHL conferences have likewise seen a broadening of topics presented, and this conference was no exception, reflected by the inclusion in this volume of a plenary presentation on the grammaticalization of expressions of negation and gendered kinship in American Sign Language.

It explores issues such as labor, legal and illegal immigration, traditional and immigrant culture, health, education, political activism, art, literature, and family, as well as historical events and developments.

Historical dialogue analysis is a new branch of historical pragmatics. The papers of this interdisciplinary volume contribute to charting the developing field by presenting a survey of recent research from the different traditions of English, German and Romance language studies. Both the introductory paper by the editors and the individual papers deal with fundamental theoretical questions, e.g. the question of types of historical developments in dialogue forms, and methodological problems, e.g. the finding and interpretation of relevant data. The fifteen case studies presented in this volume provide a wide range of new data.

The Historical Dictionary of Postwar German Literature is devoted to modern literature produced in the German language, whether from Germany, Austria, Switzerland or writers using German in other countries. This volume covers an extensive period of time, beginning in 1945 at what was called "zero hour" for German literature and proceeds into the 21st century, concluding in 2008. This is done through a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on writers, such as Nobel Prize-winners Heinrich Böll, Günter Grass, Elias Canetti, Elfriede Jelinek, and W. G. Sebald.
